AWAKENING ODE

This is the Volume IV of the Oracles which Lord Master wrote on 20 September 1939 (Earth Rabbit), at Hoa Hao (846 verses).  The style is Seven Words per line, and the same applies throughout the poem.

Khai ngọn đuốc từ-bi chí thiện,

Tìm con lành dắt lại Phật đường.

Thương dân hiền giáo đạo Nam-phương,

Đặng chỉ ngõ làm lành lánh dữ.

Sách Thánh đạo ghi trong Tam-Tự,

Người mới sanh tánh thiện Trời dành.

Bởi lớn lên tập nhiễm lợi danh,

Nên tật xấu che mờ thiện-tánh.

Thiếu giáo-dục thiếu thêm đức-hạnh,

[10] Ta quyết lòng nhắc lại tánh xưa.

Mặc tình đời gièm-siểm ghét ưa,

Rừng kinh-kệ ít người hay chữ.

Quá mắt-mỏ bởi chưng Phạn-ngữ,

Nên người đời khó kiếm cho ra.

Mõ chuông bày đọc tụng ó la,

Chớ hiếm kẻ tường thông nghĩa-lý.

Dòm trước mắt thấy điều hồ-mị,

Nên động tình bác-ái dạy răn.

Réo những ai lợi dụng làm xằng,

[20] Cho suy-sụp chơn-nhơn mờ-mịt.

Nào có khác mây đen phủ bít,

Rồi dắt nhau đến chỗ dại ngây.

Lấy tinh-thần hiệp vén ngút mây,

Trong bổn-đạo tự thân phải xử.

Xuống dương thế dạo trong lê-thứ,

Thấy bá-gia gặp lúc não-nùng.

Cảnh trần-gian nhiều nỗi lao-lung,

Việc tu tỉnh ít người hiểu lý.

Trong bá tánh muốn nơi cao quí,

[30] Phải truy tầm huyền-bí nơi cơ.

Từ sấm kinh cho đến thi thơ,

Trong chốn ấy nhiều nơi trọng yếu.

Tạo làm chi những trung với hiếu!

Ấy là người bổn-phận phải trau.

Khuyên dương-trần đừng nệ cần-lao,

Cũng rán sửa rán trau nền Đạo.

Tu đầu tóc không cần phải cạo,

Miễn cho rồi cái đạo làm người.

Kể từ nay lỡ khóc lỡ cười,

[40] Vì buồn bực thấy đời biến chuyển.

Các chư Phật từ đây lựa tuyển,

Coi ai là đức-hạnh hiền-từ.

Lời sách xưa cận thủy tri ngư,

Cận sơn lãnh trần-gian tri điểu.

Trong sấm-giảng nếu ai không hiểu,

Tầm kệ này Ta chỉ nẻo đường.

Quyết dạy trần nên nói lời thường,

Cho sanh chúng đời nay dễ biết.

Trời dông gió sái mùa sái tiết,

[50] Nắng cùng mưa cũng khác xưa rồi.

Khuyên dương-gian bỏ các việc tồi,

Đặng lo liệu cho tròn phận-sự.

Thấy trần thế hãy còn lưỡng-lự,

Muốn tu mà còn hỡi chần-chờ.

Việc thế-gian như thể cuộc cờ,

Thắng với thối một hai nước tướng.

Nào Ai có gạt dân nói bướng,

Mà dương-trần liệu lượng chánh tà.

Ta mến yêu những kẻ thiệt-thà,

[60] Nghe cơ-giảng thiết-tha lo-liệu.

Học đạo-lý như đờn trúng điệu,

Hoà bản rồi thì cứ làm theo.

Lũ Tam-Bành trong bụng còn đeo,

Đoàn Lục-tặc ta mau sớm giết.

Mài gươm trí cho tinh cho khiết,

Dứt tâm trần kiếm chữ sắc không.

Đức Di-Đà Phật-Tổ ngóng trông,

Chờ dân-chúng tìm nơi diệt khổ.

Theo Phật-Giáo từ kim chí cổ,

[70] Gốc ông cha ta cũng tu-hành.

Mà ngày nay cứ mãi tranh giành,

Danh với lợi, của tiền, quyền tước.

Thấy trần-thế ai ai cũng ước,

Đời sao không tới phứt cho rồi.

Nay khổ lao khó đứng khôn ngồi,

Lúc đói cơm buồn lòng ngơ ngẩn.

Làm ác đức nhiều điều quanh quẩn,

Như gà cồ ăn bẩn cối xay.

Thấy người hiền nói đắng nói cay,

[80] Sau mới biết thân ai lao khổ.

Nhớ thuở trước oai-linh Phật-Tổ,

Phép thần-thông trừ lũ Ma-Vương.

Chốn rừng tòng ngồi chịu nắng sương,

Tìm đạo-lý hiến cho trần-thế.

Hiệu Lão-Sĩ ra đời thật-tế,

Đem lời vàng dạy-dỗ dương-trần.

Khuyên chúng-sanh khuya sớm chuyên-cần,

Tìm nguồn-cội diệt-trừ Tứ Khổ.

Bịnh với Tử từ kim chí cổ,

[90] Sanh với Già hai chữ hoài-hoài.

Đức Thích-Ca xưa ở lầu đài,

Nghiệm Tứ-Khổ nên Ngài tầm Đạo.

Lo tu tỉnh mặc ai khinh-ngạo,

Diệt Lục-Căn đừng nhiễm Lục-Trần.

Chữ Sắc-Thinh chớ có hầu gần,

Hương với Vị xác trần nên lánh.

Chữ Xúc-Pháp treo gương Hiền Thánh,

Tránh Sáu Đường cũng đặng về Thần.

Từ xưa nay dạy chỉ nhiều lần,

[100] Mà lê-thứ không lo chẳng liệu.

With a compassion and integrity torch,

We fetch the good people to the Buddha porch.

We preach to our beloved Southerners,

To do the good and avoid being evildoers.

The new-born is naturally good.

As they grow up, so brood their self-interests,

Then bad habits blur their innate goodness.

As they lack both virtues and culture,

We resolve to recall their former nature.

Despite the laity’s love, hate, or gossip,

On jungly scriptures, few have a firm grip.

Too dear is the Pali language to explain,

So it is hard for lay folks to understand.

Bells, gongs, are contrived with loud chants,

But few’ve penetrated their meaning.

When We have seen things mystifying,

By mercy We give them our admonition.

We yell at those who profit from this deception,

Thus disrupting and obfuscating the True Self.

Like the whole sky suffers a cloudy hell,

People lead each other to being dumbfound.

Using mettle together to spilt the cloud,

Believers must solve their problems in person.

In the world, We wander among the commons,

When they are faced with the depression.

The mortal world has a lot of tribulation,

But few grasp self-cultivation’s principles.

Those who aspire to the places of nobles,

Must search the mystic in heavenly mechanisms.

From oracular proses to poems,

Therein exist several keys.

What point to create filial piety and loyalty?

As an human, one must cultivate these virtues.

We urge the laity to be conscientious,

Try to cultivate yourselves in the Path,

Cultivation does not require shaving your head,

But paying off the human Tao as required.

Henceforth,  We don't know if I we laugh or cry,

When the world in decline makes you depressed.

Buddhas will henceforth select,

Among those who are virtuous and good.

“The riverine grasp local fish traits”, said Old Books,

"Mountaineers know well their wild birds’calls ”.

If anyone doesn’t understand from this oracle,

Look up these stanzas with our guidance.

We’re keen to teach, in a simple parlance,

For people nowadays easily to grasp.

Winds and storms are hardly forecast,

Sunshines and rains also differ from the old days.

People should renounce their bad ways,

So that they can accomplish their tasks.

The worldlings are still seen to procrastinate,

Though they want to practice, they hesitate.

The world events will be like a chess game to play,

To win and to lose is one or two moves away.

None of Us has told you nonsense,

But you still ponder if We have a good intent.

We love those who are honest,

Once hearing the oracle, they do their best.

Learning morals is like playing the right music,

Sing along when you start the lyrics.

If Tam Banh and Six Robbers still hang in you,

You must have them soon removed.

Sharpen your mind perfectly,

To seek sac-khong, give up on your lay mentality.

Amitabha Buddha has been yearning,

For you to find the way to end sufferings.

Buddhism has been followed from antiquity,

By our ancestors who practiced its morality.

But nowadays, people always keep contending,

For fame, interests, treasure and ranking.

We have often heard everyone’s wish,

Why has the world not at once come to a finish?

Now in tribulation, they hardly stand or sit,

In hunger, they are sad losing their spirit.

The immoral are often caught in vicious circles,

As if roosters fed on dirty mill morsels.

They torment the good people on encounter,

But who should bear the brunt will be heard.

Remember the Majestic Patriarch Buddha,

He beat the Satanic horde with his holy power.

In cypress forests, despite tough weathers,

He sought for the Tao as a gift to the world.

In fact, he took his style of Tao Preacher,

In his golden words to coach the lay learner.

We urge your day and night committing,

To seek and uproot the causes of Four Sufferings.

Sickness and Death from ancient times,

Birth and Aging have ever stood side by side.

Though, in castles, Lord Gautama used to stay,

Discerning Four Sufferings, he sought the Way.

Keep practicing despite any disrespect,

Purify Six Sense Organs from their Six Objects.

Don’t attach to Form and Sound,

Of Odor and Taste, your body should bow out.

Model after Saints in Touch and Thought,

Away from Six Paths you may become a god.

We’ve taught you over again and again,

But you do neither care nor draw up a plan.

FINDING THE SOURCE AND THE ELIMINATION OF THE FOUR SUFFERINGS: The four sufferings are four great stanzas: Birth, Age, Illness, and Death. not a single being escapes.

In ancient times, the Buddha used to teach: "Bhikkhus! do not question whether this world is finite or infinite, limited or unlimited. Whether the world is finite or infinite, limited or unlimited, what we should consider being true in life is suffering from "birth, aging, sickness, and death."

Today, the Master advises: "Find the source of the elimination of the four sufferings." Considering that the body is the source of suffering (suffering) but its seed (root) is the affliction (set of emotions).

When the Buddha was still alive, there were four bhikkhus

studying together. One day they sat down to discuss sufferings:

The first bhikkhu said: – I think in life only fear is the most miserable, for it is impossible to calm our mind if the fear arises.

The second person's opinion: - I think in life only hunger is the most miserable, because, without foods and clothing, on one can calmly practice the Tao.

The third bhikkhu states: – In my opinion, anger is the most miserable, for once this emotion arises, we will lose all wisdom, to such an extent that we might hurt our relatives and cause them no less suffering.

The fourth bhikkhu said: - Personally, I do not suffer from anything as much as lewdness, It is the seed of birth and death.  For all their lives, humans have to work so hard for it, sometimes committing sexual misconduct and to blur their wisdom.

While the four bhikkhus were debating, all thinking that their remarks were the most correct, fortunately, the Buddha had just come forward, four of them joined the Buddha and asked him to resolve it.

The Buddha said: - You must all know, but only know the cause of suffering, not its origin. The root of suffering is due to the body, where there is greed, anger, hunger, and fear... If this body is not there, there are no four sufferings. So all the troubles and thousand sufferings are concentrated in the body. But the main reason is the projection of the fictitious mind, because of which there is a disturbing emotion that gives birth to the body and there follow suit the sufferings.  In order to end the suffering, it is necessary to end the affliction and fictitious mind.

Having heard the Buddha’s lecture, all the four bhikkhus joyfully bowed to the Buddha.

THE SOUTH: Also called Meridionnal Region.   That means Southern Direction, implying the country of Vietnam.  It is the Nam Diêm Phù Đề, that is Nam Thiệm Bộ Châu, one of the Four Great Continents of the Saba World. the Master has ever advised:

             The Center  turns out Southernly,

The Saintly Gathering is held to select the loyal and filial.

TRUE-SELF:

Zhenren (Chinese:真人; pinyin:zhēnrén; Wade–Giles:chen-jen;lit.'true or genuine person' or 'person of truth') is a Chinese term that first appeared in the Zhuangzi meaning "Taoist spiritual master", roughly translatable as "Perfected Person". Religious Taoism mythologized zhenren to rank above xian" transcendent; immortal" in the celestial hierarchy, while Chinese Buddhism used it to translate Arahant "Enlightened One".
