EXHORTATION FOR FAITHFUL

After having read the Oracles, examine yourself and improve your improper habits and ways of life and, if you have committed any wrongdoing, renounce it and observe the following commandments:

FIRST: You ought not to drink alcoholic beverages, play gambling, take illicit drugs, join the brothel and gang, but fully observe Three Fundamental Bonds and Five Constants (1).

SECOND: You ought not to be lazy, but thrifty, diligent, hard-working, and a genuine practicer. You ought not to argue with each other but tolerate each other when you are angry.

THIRD: You ought not to be extravagant for the makeover, regard monies above humanity, righteousness, and morality. Don’t be selfish, sycophant, nor neglect the poor.

FOURTH: You ought not to summon God, Buddhas, Deities, Saints, for you to order or curse because these have not intruded upon you.

FIFTH: You ought not to eat the meat of water buffalo, bull, dog, kill nor to harm animals to offer to any Deities and Saints because the latter will never take your bribe to acquit you. If you sin, you will incur punishment. The spirits that take your offerings and cure you are evil ones; if you keep offering them, they will disturb and harm you once they get used to this.

SIXTH: You ought not to burn votive banknotes and clothing, which cost monies for no reason, because the Underworld never takes bribes from you, nor could it use it. Instead of wasting them, you should keep your monies for the homeless, needy, and people with a disability.

SEVENTH: As far as social or ethical issues are concerned, you ought to think about them thoroughly and over and over again before judging the matter.

EIGHTH: In short, you ought to adore each other like the children of the same father and to guide each other into the moral path. Whoever has flawlessly performed shall ascend to the Western Paradise for a haven and complete their training to return and salvage the sentient beings.

All male and female Buddhists should often read sutras in their spare time and safeguard their country’s mores, observe our proper customs, and discard all the superstitions that lead to the decadence of our society.

The Dharma ever reconciles and harmonizes well,

Examine others thoroughly and examine yourself.

If they understand their lot, happily tolerate them,

As you can do, so will they do the shame.
