Be rather poor yet noble than otherwise,
Cultivate the tree of good deeds for latter times.
In order to remove your greed,
Do charity to get rid of your being selfish.
This thought often comes to the noble thinker,
Wordly things resemble clouds and water,
Our bodies have now and then transmigrat̀ed,
Let alone that asset at times rise and at times fade.
The Ninth Evil is Rancor, Anger for a dub,
Fire in our minds is not ignited but flares up.
When anger bursts out, there is nothing to prepare,
We warn you so you can beforehand take care.
Anger often prompts the rise in brutalities,
Thus, the human beings from world adversities,
Stir up widespread hatred and rancour,
Thus, many contests for supremacy occur.
The victors boast that their strength is superior,
Then they are hated and envied by others.
The loser feel shame and take harmful actions,
Who create cruel karma and cyclic retributions.
In anger, they pay no heed to humanity,
As though the jungle tigers that were fiery.
Once they see meat, they devour and rip it off,
Until it has been torn apart, they don’t stop.
You feel great relief after getting rid of it,
Tolerance should be learnt as part of your habit.
Don’t hesitate to get on with the practice,
Tolerate the mistakes made by the stupid.
You should also forbear from making arguments,
So you don’t displease all the attendants.
Only if you are honest and look jovial,
You can call yourself a Buddhist disciple.
If you've already taken refuge in Buddhism,
Quarrelling is contrary to its humanism.
Last, the Tenth Evil is Ignorance and Stupor,
Which originate from immemorial era.
Ignorance blurs and hampers your intellect,
Often causing people to make a mistake.
Concerned to accumulate their transient things,
People do not cultivate their moral beings.
They weave a dubious web of annoyances.
They cling to a world of toilings and tragedies.
When they do something, they rarely think it over,
They keep committing sins that create a bad karma.
To remove ignorance, resort to insight,
Every action must be wise and upright.
Don’t believe in whatever one advises,
If you act stupidly, you will waste your lives.
The evil, once removed, gives way to good deed,
Buddha will guide you when your mind is neat.
Grow the benign tree which bears scented fruit,
Even though you can’t see it, you never lose it.
Despite your being labelled as a dummy,
Do not feel down and neglect your integrity.
We wish our appeal reach out to monks,
And the adherents for your response.
From now on if you want to sustain Buddhism,
Don’t take care of yourself with egoism.
If you have left home, you must sacrifice,
For the Tao, your physical and mental lives.
Don’t feign wearing the robes of votaries,
To cheat people, by carrying the rosaries.
That leads people to ridicule your portal,
No law will tolerate you from this scandal,
Cultivating yourself, do not hold large rituals,
To attract a lot of offerings from people,
For the falsehood of repairing pagodas,
But you take them for your own expenditures.
Thus how couldn’t people fall in disarray,
Listening to diverse Sects’ luring sway.
The whole sangha in the country is divided,
Dharmas, pagodas and Buddhas separated.
The whole world is filled up with dire depression,
They lose their self-belief and orientation.
For your sake, we don’t mind to make an effort,
Writing up a dissertation in a few words.
It is up to you to believe or not believe in us,
You do it or you don’t, this is not a must.
We pray for Buddhas to return from all over,
To help you no longer stay as prisoners.
In the clear night, we lean on the moon verandha,
Watching the world, we have a deep dolour.
Since taking refuge in the Buddhist school,
We gave up on all my worldly allure.
The adherents are still clinging to the world,
They are urged to seek for the truth.
We resolve to split the layers of hazy cloud,
To help you join the search for the way out.
We have expounded whatever you need,
To transfer to your posterity for practice.
Practice to seek the weather to be moderate,
Peace to return to the world with Heaven’s grace.
Practise to escape from the dangerous place,
For the countries from all over to reconcile.
Practice for the country to be calm and prosper,
And for the Hell King to spare your ancestors.
Practice for Buddha to change your character,
No ignorance holds you down so you can fly.
Practice to enter the Buddha Boat of Insight,
For you to step on the Lotus that is blissful,
