French baguettes in Tonkin

BÁNH MÌ

Mì kia gốc phải nước mình không?

Nghe thấy rao mì thốt động lòng.

Chiếc bánh não-nùng mùi khách lạ,

Bát cơm đau-đớn máu cha ông.

Văn-minh những vỏ trưng ba mặt,

Thấm-thía tim gan ứa mấy giòng.

Nhớ lại bảy mươi năm trở ngược,

Say mì lắm kẻ bán non sông.

Khải-hoàn dân-chúng mới nhàn an,

Dân mảng còn mê giấc mộng tràng.

Thảm-thê thế sự mùi cay đắng,

Ta hỡi đau lòng khách ngoại bang.

BÁNH MÌ

Does that bread originate from our country?

The peddler's call is so touchy.

The sinister loaf has the smell of strangers,

The bloodied bowl of rice hurts our ancestors.

Civilized crusts display their three faces,

My poignant heart and liver ooze in traces.

Seventy years on in our memory,

Banh Mi addicted, many have sold their country.

Only by triumph do the masses enjoy peace,

Now in a long sleep they seem pleased.

The bitterness people have must be damned!

The foreigner leaves us with so much shame.
