The romance between Tang dynasty's Emperor Xuanzong,
Yang Yu Huan and An Lushan
Yang Yuhuan was born on the first day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar (June 22nd in the solar calendar) in the 7th year of Kaiyuan (719). His grandfather, Yang Wang, was a Senior Commander of the State and the Minister for the Public Service of the Sui Dynasty. He was killed by Ly Shimin in the early Tang Dynasty. Her father, Yang Xuanyan, used to serve a secretary of Shuzhou; his uncle Yang Xuanyan used to serve as the local Cao of Henan Prefecture. Yang Yuhuan spent her childhood in Shuzhou.
In the 17th year of Kaiyuan, Yang Yuhuan, who was about 10 years old, was fostered at the home of his third uncle Yang Xuanjing in Luoyang because of the death of his father. Yang Yuhuan’s natural beauty, coupled with a superior educational environment, enabled her to be culturally refined, smooth in manners, proficient in melody, good at singing and dancing, and adept at playing pipa. In poet Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Regret", it is how she was described: she has a rare natural beauty, and she for her to stay by the side of the king.
On the 22nd of July of Kaiyuan, Tang Xuanzong's daughter Princess Xianyi held a wedding in Luoyang, and Yang Yuhuan was also invited to attend. The younger brother of Princess Xianyi is Shou Wang Li Cheng who fell in love with Yang Yuhuan at first sight. At the request of Imperial consort Wu Hui, Tang Xuanzong ordered her to be Shou Wang’s concubine. After marriage, the two are very affectionate. In the 25th year of Kaiyuan (737), Concubine Wu Hui passed away. Li Cheng's mother, Concubine Wu Hui, was Xuanzong's most beloved concubine, and her courtesy in the palace was equivalent to that of the queen. Xuanzong was depressed and unhappy. At that time, there were thousands in his harem, but no one suited him. Someone said that Yang Yuhuan "has a good posture and is suitable for the court", so Tang Xuanzong summoned Yang to the harem.
In October, on the 28th year of Kaiyuan (740), in order to bless Xuanzong’s mother Dou, the Queen Mother of Tang Dynasty, Yang Yu Huan was ordained at Taizhen monastery, her Dharma name as "Taizhen" Tao practician. On Tianbao the 4th year (745), Tang Xuanzong designated Wei Zhaoxun's daughter as the Chou princess, then designated Yang Yuhuan as the imperial concubine. Xuanzong abolished the title of Imperial Consort and has not yet established this title and, on this opportunity, he conferred on her Yang Gui Fei (Imperial Concubine), equivalent to the Imperial Consort.
Xuanzong himself composed ‘Raiment of Feathers Melody”, asked his musicians to play this new music, gave Yang Fei a golden hairpin, and personally inserted it on her temple hair. Xuanzong said to the harem: "I have the concubine Yang as if I had the most precious treasure" (Ancient and Modern Secrets in Palaces, Vol. 3) and revised it into a new song "Debaozi" (Obtaining the Treasure), showing his utmost love toward her. Perhaps, history proves consistently with many people’s thought that some emperors will lose their country, mainly because of the influence by some seductive women.
Therefore, there are always some biases against beautiful women, just like the early Yang Guifei, who was deemed by many people, the main reason for the loss of their countries. However, those who have an understanding of the situation at the time will know that these people are just a weapon in the struggle for power. Some think that love is only a maneuver by others, who, in the end, put their lives on the line because of this, and their miseries were misunderstood by members of posterity. In the Tang Dynasty, it was relatively open-minded, and the relationship between Concubine Yang and An Lushan was even more confusing.
For Concubine Yang, she was originally the wife of Li Mao, but in the end, Li Longji liked the beauty of his daughter-in-law. Then he forced his crown prince to cede her to him, but he has not yet fully committed to anyone for succeeding imperial consort. On the contrary, after enjoying a certain period of beauty, some incredible incidents began to appear. The appearance of An Lushan attracted the love of Li Longji and Yang Guifei.
Since then, the relationship between the three has become commonplace. Even An Lushan, who was sixteen years older than the concubine Yang, became her godson. The two often danced together. The physical contact was extremely frequent throughout the process, and the relationship between the two has been completely out of control since then. What is even more unexpected is that Li Longji knew nothing about this situation. Of course, the main reason for this attitude is that this person has found a new love again. And An Lushan and Yang Guifei didn't know how to converge. Li Longji just smiled all the way after seeing this situation, making the incident completely out of control.
An Lushan is a very ambitious person. He has always wanted to occupy the Tang dynasty, and finally ordered Li Longji to subdue the country completely during the Anshi Rebellion, and then the generals in Maweipo asked Li Longji to execute Yang Guifei, and finally, this person passed away and the situation turned peaceful. An Lushan also became very irritable because of this. In the end, An Lushan was directly killed by his own prince, and the entanglement between the three ended there. But when you think about it, neither of them has a sincere relationship with Concubine Yang, but only regards her as a tool to fight for power.
